Proceed with caution! You need to check where the liquid is leaking from, make sure it is safe to turn the heater up to its max setting to help evaporate as much moisture as possible.
If it is leaking from the drawer, the most likely cause of a leak is that your collection drawer has overflowed. This can be because of an excessive level of liquid or the indicator hose hasn’t been connected properly.
DO NOT open the front panel when there is liquid in the indicator tube.
Follow these steps to manage excess liquid in the automatic Ecolet models:
- Turn the heaters up to max setting, there should be three red lights on the panel indicating that both heaters are on high
- Make sure that the ventilation pipe is well insulated to prevent condensation and free from blockages
- Add fresh layer of bulking agent to absorb liquid in the main composting chamber, use the provided rake to level this across the top of the pile and let the automatic mixer arms slowly rotate the pile
- Humid or moist conditions will hinder the evaporation process so try to keep the immediate environment as dry as possible
- Monitor the liquid in the indicator tube
To drain liquid from the base of the Ecolet, follow the same instructions as installing an overflow.
- Wear proper protective equipment such as gloves and a mask
- Consider where you can run the drain hose to. Do you have an existing plumbing drain that is accessible for the toilet? Can you run the hose down into a liquid collection? Or, can you run the hose outside?
- Have the drainage hose prepared before removing the indicator tube and connecting the drainage hose
- Clean any spills thoroughly with hot water and detergent
